Announce It in a News Release!
(and have some fun)

You, too, can write a news release! You do not have
to be a media professional to call attention to
something “noteworthy”, or, "newsworthy".
If it is happening in your life and you think it would be
of interest to others, let them know about it. Anounce
it in a news release.
Not only will you discover the effectiveness of writing
news releases, but you will also discover that if you
can write a “good” news release, you can write just
about anything.
The basic components of a news release are the
basic components of just about every form of writing,
from memos and letters to novels.
The first essential is to try and keep it to one page.
One page is easier to handle, as far as those who are
receiving it are concerned. There is not much chance
of misplacing a page from a multiple page news
release.
The primary consideration is to not discourage
anyone from reading it by intimidating them with too
much to read in one sitting.
If you have a lot of information to communicate, write
a comprehensive one page news release covering the
essential elements and attach the additional
information, like additional details, pictures and
direction maps, to the one page news release as just
that, additional details.
Begin by typing a header that clearly states, “News
Release!” and drop to the next line and date it.
Create space under that header and type a brief but
catchy title, like, “Something You Should Know About”,
but be specific in regards to announcing your own
specific event or information.
Create space, again, and cover the essential
components of a news release.
Who?
What?
When?
Where?
Why? (why it is important to your reader.)
Contact? (for more information)
(include a reachable contact
telephone number.)
(sometimes, a reachable email
address or website address will
suffice but a telephone number
is the most effective!)
Create space between each one of those essential
components and remember to be as brief as possible.
Just the essentials here, okay.
That’s a news release!
Sometimes, considerations for formatting your news
release for easy reading, like double spacing, might
force you to compose a two page news release. Try
to avoid that at all costs but if you have to, it is
acceptable.
Just remember not to overload that second page.
That will communicate the illusion of a one page
communication to whoever flips over to that second
page.
(If the second page is overloaded, the reader may
decide to put it aside and deal with it later.) That is
not the effect you want!
You can use news releases to announce important
business events and information, social events and
information, community events and information, family
notices or just about anything that would be
interesting to your reader.
If you want to get someone’s attention, send him or
her a news release, too! You will be effective in
communicating your point and, if you use a little
imagination, you can have some fun doing it.
